Proposed 2026 Transit Service Changes
September 24, 2025 / TriMet News
We know you depend on TriMet services, and service cuts are always the last resort. But with rising costs and lower revenue, TriMet must reduce spending now to avoid deeper cuts later, which would affect many more riders.
In July 2025, they announced a $300 million annual budget gap. TriMet had already reduced spending by about $150 million, and that’s before the larger service changes and cuts proposed below. They reduced spending mostly through cutting internal expenses, reducing staff, and pausing future bus service increases.
The service proposals below are based on ridership data as well as the feedback TriMet heard from riders and the community in fall 2025:
Preserve service as much as possible by first reducing where buses and trains run on the same route or close together.
Keep Frequent Service lines that make our service convenient and reliable.
Maintain transit to reach critical destinations like medical care and schools.
Their proposals center on network efficiency, combining lines or reducing where lines run near others. They propose eliminating some bus lines and moving routes to maintain as much service as possible. This focuses their service investment where it is needed and used most. While they are keeping frequency on higher-used lines, some proposals reduce how often buses arrive at times when fewer people are riding.
TriMet seeks your feedback. If you have comments or suggestions about these proposals, please let TriMet know by January 31, 2026.
