The Altares y Muertos Tour is free and open to all, and it has become one of the most popular and beloved activities of the Milagro Central Eastside Muertos Celebration.

Beginning at 11:30 AM, participants assemble in El Zócalo, the community gathering space at El Centro Milagro, and each guest is gifted a garland of silk marigolds to decorate themselves and their bicycles. Sometimes called zempachule or Flor de Muerto (Flower of the Dead), the marigold is an integral symbol of Día de Muertos. With their bright orange- and yellow-colored petals and strong fragrance, marigolds are believed to have the power to guide the souls of the dead back into the world of the living.

At 12:00 PM, the first group of participants departs on a route around Portland’s Central Eastside, stopping intermittently at these partner businesses that are hosting altars as part of the Altares y Muertos Public Art Exhibition:

Along the way, they are guided by volunteers from The Street Trust, helping ensure everyone’s safety.

This year, altars will be on public display beginning Saturday, October 24 and may be viewed during each business’ normal operating hours through Friday, November 6. (A link to the map of all tour locations will be available for download on this page beginning Friday, October 23.)

The Altares y Muertos Tour will include a brief stop at the second annual Blumenauer Bridge Witching Hour, which takes place that day, but no altar is on display at that event.

Through personal stories, simple brain-based concepts, and hands-on exercises, participants will build their own Resilience Toolkit and practice four tools:

• Catch the Thought – recognize the negative story your brain is telling you.

• Build Your Reset – identify personal strategies that help you pause and shift your mindset.

• Rewrite the Story – look at setbacks through the lens of learning and what may be possible next.

• My Next Move – focus on one small, actionable step within your control.

Participants will leave with a 7-Day Resilience Experiment they can use to put these tools into practice during their job search—and beyond.

Because you don't need to be positive all the time. You just need to get faster at finding your way back.

Altares y Muertos is a cultural arts program from IDEAL PDX. Since 2016, it has created spaces for remembrance, creativity, and cultural connection through community altars, workshops, artist residencies, and intergenerational learning. It has grown alongside Centro Milagro, Cargo, and neighbors throughout the Central Eastside. This fall, artists are installing ofrendas in small businesses across the neighborhood, and we’re honored to be one of them. The altars will be on display from October 24 through November 6, and this party kicks it all off.

Siempre Bailando by Savina Monet

The heart of the afternoon is Siempre Bailando, the ofrenda local artist Savina Monet created for the distillery. We invite you to add a piece of tinsel to the altar as an offering to someone you carry with you. You can also contribute to the community ofrenda and share memories of the people you love and remember.

A baile for every generation

DJ Rico Ricardo, host of Portland’s Bailando Afuera dance party, is bringing the music. The baile is free and open to everyone: kids, grandparents, and everyone in between. Come dance together and connect with your ancestors across generations.

Community on the street

We’re closing SE Salmon in front of the distillery so local community aid organizations can set up booths. Stop by to learn about the support and resources they offer our neighbors.

Food & drinks

Grab tamales from La Oaxaqueña and sip specialty craft cocktails made with New Deal spirits. We’ll also have beer, wine, cider, and mocktails, so there’s something for everyone.

Explore the museum after hours with hands-on science demos, planetarium shows, and cultural performances celebrating Portland’s Black community. Now in its fifth year, it’s a family-friendly evening where everyone is welcome.

Track down which animals left behind the footprints, fur, and droppings in a bilingual, hands-on workshop for 3- to 5-year-olds and their grown-ups. Tickets include same-day museum admission, so the exploring keeps going after class wraps.
